A Story of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed I would book a place to stay after getting there, yet once I got there, a big convention was in town and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.
As a visitor from Singapore, I thought the possibility of bed down in the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate all night. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and began walking near the casino, reasoning I could pass those hours somewhere that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan at my peak for nailing a crucial interview the following day, but as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.
The world needs more folks who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared confused because a woman saw me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired if I was OK. I explained my situation and without hesitation she said I could crash on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering a meal: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I had access to the bathroom and somewhere safe to rest for the evening.
In retrospect, I now understand the significant risk she took as a young woman allowing a man she had only just encountered stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to the potential danger. As a dad now, I’m amazed she did that – but still deeply appreciative.
I never did attending the Australian National University, and I never saw the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of human compassion. It is my wish karma has repaid her generosity many times over. We could all use more people who show such kindness.
