British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.
