Child of Former South African Leader Jacob Zuma Rejects Terrorism Charges as Court Case Starts
The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror accusations at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being prosecuted over statements she posted on social media in the past during deadly unrest in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.
A period of chaos in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and intentional burning, caused at least 300 individuals killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (2.2 billion pounds).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of encouraging this violence and faces accusations of provocation to commit terrorism and civil unrest.
Context of the Case
The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the ex-leader's detention for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an probe into allegations of graft while he was serving as president.
She has repeatedly denied the charges against her, with her lawyer previously calling the state's case as insufficient.
She has also frequently stated the charges against her were an bid to settle political scores with her dad after he established his own political organization and competed against the ANC.
Endorsement and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which said the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and familial targeting" against the previous head of state and his relatives.
A few of supporters from her group, her party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other group representatives attended the proceedings inside.
The defense has argued that the proof presented by government lawyers is inadequate and lacks substantial evidence for a criminal finding.
Key Points of the Case
