Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in multiple disciplines.
