Israelis have assembled across the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on that day.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official said the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, because of differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are working hard to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Critical Issues in Talks

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Future administration of the territory

Civilian Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square previously, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location feels like home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see all home returned, we can breathe again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their support for the families of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Protester one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to come back home. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of the population desire the hostilities to end in return for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone areas and in the eastern district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"Once the evening falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.

"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Medical Crisis

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the remains of several people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the south region of that area indicated another two victims had been transported. A person was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get aid to the south region, health workers said.
