New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in March.
