Our Task Is Solely Killing' - How Sudan's Vicious Paramilitary Group Carried out a Massacre
Caution: This Story Presents Graphic Descriptions of Shootings.
Fighters laugh as they ride on the back of a pick-up truck, speeding past a row of multiple corpses and driving facing the setting Sudanese evening sky.
"Look at this extensive accomplishment. Look at this instance of ethnic cleansing," a fighter cheers.
He beams as he points the recording device on his own face and his fellow militiamen, their RSF insignia visible: "They will all be killed like this."
These individuals are celebrating a massacre that relief organizations believe claimed the lives of more than thousands of people in the Sudan's metropolis of the Darfur city in recent weeks.
A City Isolated from the World
Following their control of the city under blockade for approximately two years, from the summer the militia moved to strengthen its dominance and blockade the remaining civilian population.
Space-based imagery reveal that forces started to erect a immense berm - a raised dirt embankment - around the edges of al-Fashir, sealing off entry points and blocking relief supplies.
While the blockade worsened, 78 individuals were slain in an paramilitary assault on a religious building on 19 September, while the UN reported fifty-three further were murdered in unmanned aircraft and artillery bombardments on a refugee settlement in fall.
Disturbing Video Depicts Defenseless Individuals Shot
At dawn on October 26th the paramilitary force defeated the last army defenses and captured the primary compound in the urban area, the main facility of the 6th Infantry Division, as the government forces retreated.
Perhaps the most horrific recordings to appear and studied revealed the aftermath of a massacre at a university building on the western of the city, where dozens corpses were seen strewn over the floor.
A senior person clad in a traditional garment sat alone amongst the bodies. The individual looked to glance as a militiaman carrying with a firearm moved along the stairs in the direction of him. Raising his weapon, the shooter discharged a single bullet at the man, who fell to the floor motionless.
"Why is this one still living," a combatant shouted. "Execute this one."
Orbital photography captured on late October appeared to confirm that killings were also carried out on the roads of al-Fashir, according to a analysis issued by the university analysis team.
An witness who spoke stated they had witnessed "multiple of our family members being massacred - they were assembled in a specific area and each one eliminated."
Paramilitary Leaders Try to Implement Damage Control
Following the events that ensued from the atrocity, militia commander acknowledged that his troops had committed "atrocities" and stated the events would be investigated.
Among those apprehended was after a investigation detailing his killings. Meticulously choreographed and produced recording published on the militia's authorized messaging platform reveal the individual being escorted into a detention area at a jail on the outskirts of el-Fasher.
At the same time, the militia and associated online accounts began attempting to alter the story.
Posts showing its combatants providing assistance to inhabitants were circulated by several accounts, while the force's public relations unit published multiple recordings claiming to show the proper treatment of army detainees.
Regardless of the online initiative being employed by the militia, their conduct in el-Fasher have sparked global condemnation.
