The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Application of Generative AI for Next Project
The developer behind hit titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its next major project, creating significant anticipation within the player base. However, follow-up comments from the company's co-founder have added a new dimension to the narrative, addressing the studio's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.
AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute
In a recent statement, the studio's founder detailed that the developer is utilizing AI technology for particular supporting functions. These include enhancing presentation materials, generating early-stage visual ideas, and creating temporary dialogue.
Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the shipping content in the game will be authored solely by actual artists. "We are creating everything manually," he affirmed.
Larian is continuously expanding our pool of concept artists and are currently putting together writing teams.
Since visual development is being explicitly called out — we right now have twenty-three visual developers and have positions available for more artists.
Each initiative we do is incremental and aimed at having people spend additional energy on making content.
Any machine learning application implemented properly is a boost to a developer's routine, never a stand-in for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The revelation of using AI originally sparked unease among portions of the player base. In reaction, Vincke offered more elaboration on social media.
"Our team utilizes AI tools to explore references, in the same way we use the internet and physical media," he wrote. "In the initial planning process we use it as a rough outline for structure which we then substitute with hand-crafted artwork."
He noted, "Larian brings on artists for their inherent skill, not for their capacity to execute what a algorithm proposes."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had in the past broken down the company's focused strategy to this technology, grouping its use into primary areas:
- Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes motion capture cleaning, audio processing, and pipeline-specific tasks like retargeting animations.
- Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to quickly build simple models of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of full implementation.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Researching how AI could one day facilitate innovative gameplay, particularly in simulating unforeseen permutations in a complex RPG.
He clearly affirmed that core creative domains — such as visual art — are are absolutely not fields where the team is replacing creative input. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these exact positions.
"Our studio is neither launching a game with any AI components, nor looking at cutting creatives to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
