The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series from Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
