The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and cafecito as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
