The Young Spinner Earns Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Team
England have chosen a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether the venue conditions suit a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers complete the bowling group, with the latter expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several previous Tests.
During these games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin.
Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed 29, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the probable choice.
Spin Options Weighed
Previously there was rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to provide some slow bowling while also bolstering the batting lineup.
However McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the past in Australian pitches,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
