This Diamond Family Personal Video Game of the Year List for 2025
Alright, what did you think of the past year in your household? Was it truly wonderful as you pretended on social media? Packed with A-grades for the kids and wild dress-up celebrations for the parents? Maybe it felt like a swamp of letdowns with only occasional enjoyable flotsam? Could any part be genuine, or is everyone now digitally altered AI slop beings with celebrity teeth?
I've corralled my thoughts for a chat, whether they wanted to or not, to discuss the most important thing in a calendar year: which releases we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Title Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
On her phone, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Game Middle Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Point taken.
Release Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her older sibling has outside the game.
Title the Wife Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at 60% completion and ended it at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Game I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am behaving this way to prepare him so he can mature and play games for adults. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is a machine. Even better than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted strategy digital pastime, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that endlessly add to their range is you eventually realize and see it is all just an attempt to lure you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a classic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the off. I wish I could dispatch my problems so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it needed earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after appropriate hospitality.
Title That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I acknowledge Balatro was 2024’s surprise hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets absolutely everything right. Its gameplay loop is a fantastic concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so creative it has become a game I would happily play any time. Throw in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Game I Got the Most Flak For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a bit of backlash when I critiqued how a technical issue in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a massive gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I appreciated even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that as written, because I appreciate the effort, and they are obviously an astute judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult Metroidvania-esque thing and provide little guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I understand that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my mid-fifties. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Scandal of 2025
Debate between questionable alliances that sparked debate, and premium pricing. Both difficult to justify and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at dinner time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or phone use, but it is sore like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
