Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural changes.
