The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
